Moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine-coated front element support outdoor use and easier cleaning, while close focusing to 0.17m at the wide end opens up flowers and tabletop details. From landscapes and architecture to environmental portraits, handheld video and selfies, the wide-to-normal range lets you change perspective without changing lenses.
Key Features
20-40mm Versatility With Constant F/2.8
At the wide end, emphasize the depth and scale of architecture or include more of the landscape around your subject. Move toward 40mm for environmental portraits that balance the person with their surroundings. The F/2.8 maximum aperture stays constant throughout the zoom range, supporting background separation at the normal endpoint. On APS-C cameras, the full-frame-equivalent range is 30-60mm.
VXD Autofocus for Stills and Video
The linear-motor focus drive delivers precise tracking for everyday subjects, from pets to people. Support for Nikon Hybrid AF and Eye AF lets compatible cameras use their focusing capabilities, while M/A operation and in-camera lens correction add flexibility.1 Quiet autofocus supports video use, although lens operating sounds may still enter a recording.2
Optical Correction and BBAR-G2 Coating
A 12-element, 11-group design incorporates four LD elements and two glass-molded aspherical elements for optical correction. BBAR-G2 coating reduces flare and ghosting when composing scenes with backlighting. For portraits and close subjects, the nine-blade circular diaphragm creates rounded background highlights that complement the lens's background blur.3
Close Focus to 0.17m
Work close to flowers, jewelry and tabletop subjects while retaining the context around them. At 20mm, minimum object distance is 0.17m (6.7 in) with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8. At 40mm, the lens focuses to 0.29m (11.4 in) with 1:5.1 maximum magnification, giving you another framing option for small details.
Moisture-Resistant Protection and Easy Cleaning
For outdoor photography, moisture-resistant seals help protect the lens, and the USB-C port is water-proofed. A fluorine-coated front element makes cleaning easier after use. These practical details complement a zoom intended for travel, landscapes and everyday shooting.
65-Degree Zoom Rotation and Sculpted Handling
The short 65-degree zoom-ring rotation lets you move quickly between wide and normal framing. Revised ring torque supports smoother adjustments, while enlarged ring regions, striped rubber textures and slimmer adjacent body sections form a hand-fitting contour. Compact handling suits camera grips and small gimbals for mobile video work. The glossy black exterior also offers improved abrasion and fingerprint resistance.
Tamron Lens Utility Customization
Tamron Lens Utility supports smartphone and PC customization for still photography and video, with available functions determined by lens model and mount.4 Optional Tamron-LINK enables wireless smartphone communication, while a separately sold CC-350 USB-C cable provides wired Android connectivity.5 Choose supported functions for your Nikon Z configuration to tailor lens operation to the way you shoot.
Features
20-40mm Constant F/2.8 Zoom
Covers landscapes, portraits and everyday snapshots with a wide-to-normal focal range.
VXD Linear-Motor Autofocus
Keeps focusing responsive during still and video shooting.
Nikon Z Camera Function Support
Works with Hybrid AF, Eye AF, M/A and in-camera lens correction on compatible cameras.1
Four LD and Two Glass-Molded Aspherical Elements
Provides optical correction within a 12-element, 11-group design.
BBAR-G2 Coating
Helps limit unwanted flare and ghosting.
Nine-Blade Circular Diaphragm
Rounds out-of-focus highlights for background blur.3
0.17m Wide-End Close Focus
Photograph small details at up to 1:3.8 magnification.
Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating
Combines protective seals and a water-proofed USB-C port with easier front-element cleaning.
65-Degree Zoom-Ring Rotation
Quick reframing complements compact handling for camera grips and small gimbals.
Glossy Black, Textured-Ring Design
Sculpted contours and revised ring torque support a comfortable grip and smooth adjustments.
Improved Abrasion and Fingerprint Resistance
Helps maintain the exterior through everyday handling.
Tamron Lens Utility
Tailor supported lens settings to your shooting workflow.4
Optional Wired and Wireless Connections
Connect through Tamron-LINK or a CC-350 USB-C cable for Android.5
Footnotes
1 Camera functions vary.
